Основна частина уроку

  1. Listening

Teacher: Now you’ll listen to some facts from W. Shakespeare’s biography and the time when he lived and worked.

Pupil 1: (СЛАЙД 3 афоризм) The name of William Shakespeare is known all over the world. The last half of the 16-th and the beginning of the 17-th centuries are known as the Golden Age of English Renaissance and sometimes are called 'The Age of Shakespeare'.

Pupil 2: (СЛАЙД 4 Стратфорд сьогодення) People often call Shakespeare 'Our National Bard', 'The Immortal Poet of Nature'. We really know few facts of his life and many of them are doubtful. But some facts are known to us and are proved by documents.

Pupil I: (СЛАЙД 5 будинок фасад) The first facts of Shakespeare's biography are that he was born on April 23, 1564 in Stratford – on – Avon in the family of John and Mary Shakespeare. (СЛАЙД 6 подвір’я) His father who couldn’t even write was a glove-maker and a dealer in corn, meat, wool. William's mother was a daughter of a rich farmer in the village of Wilmcote. (СЛАЙД 7 портрет, напис)

Pupil 2: William’s father was a rich man and gave his son quite a good education. At the age of 6 he was sent to school. (СЛАЙД 8 школа фасад)  William studied at a grammar school in Stratford. He could read and translate Latin books. (СЛАЙД 9 класна кімната)  There he learned to love reading. William was fond of English folk-songs and ballads.

Pupil 1: We also know that, being 18 years old, William married Anne Hathaway, a farmer’s daughter. (СЛАЙД 10 сімейне життя) We don’t know how he earned his living during these early years, perhaps he helped his father in the family business. During these years his three children were born: Susannah, the eldest and twins – a son Hamnet and a daughter Judith. (СЛАЙД 11 королева Єлизавета перша)

Teacher: At the age of 21 William went to London and became an actor. He'd left Ann and their children at home. Do you have any ideas why it happened? What could have forced a man to change his life so suddenly and leave his home and family behind? (СЛАЙД 12 Лондон)

Pupil 2: When John Shakespeare became poor William was 21 and he went to London and became an actor. He went to London, leaving Anne and the children at home. Actually, we don’t know exactly why he did so. (СЛАЙД 13 театр)

Pupil 1: Some people say that the reason was his love of poetry and theatre. But there is another story which says that he had to run away from law because he killed some deer belonging to a rich man.

Pupil 2: In London Shakespeare began to act and to write plays and soon became an important member of a well-known acting company. (СЛАЙД 14 книги)

Teacher: "Romeo and Juliet" is one of his most popular tragedies. It’s a story of misunderstanding, forbidden love and hatred. (СЛАЙД 15 глядачі) You've heard of it for sure.  I'm suggesting you to watch a short scene from the play - a dialog between Romeo and Juliet. (СЛАЙД 16 Верона)

Romeo.

See how she leans her cheek upon her hand!
О that I were a glove upon that hand,
That I might touch that cheek!

Juliet: Ay me!

Romeo (aside).

She speaks.
О speak again, bright angel...

Juliet.

О Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?
Deny thy father, and refuse thy name;
Or if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love,
And I'll no longer be a Capulet.

Romeo (aside). Shall I hear more, or shall I speak at this?

Juliet.

'Tis but thy name that is my enemy;
Thou art thy self, though not a Montague.
What's Montague? It is nor hand, nor foot,
Nor arm, nor face, nor any other part
Belonging to a man. О be some other name!
What's in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet.
So Romeo would, were he not Romeo called,
Retain that dear perfection which he owes
Without that title. Romeo doff thy name,
And for thy name, which is no pi Take all myself.

Romeo.

I take thee at thy word:
Call me but love, and I'll be new baptized;
Henceforth I never will be Romeo
By a name
I know not how to tell thee who I am
My name, dear saint, is hateful to myself
Because it is an enemy to thee;
Had I it written, I would tear the word.

Teacher: (СЛАЙД 17 лексика) I see your confusion. Some words may sound unfamiliar and strange. The reason is quite simple. Some English words are archaic, they sound different nowadays. You can see an example on the screen:

I believe you have understood the main idea of this dialogue.

Pupil 2: Most of his plays were performed in the new (modern) Globe Theatre built on the bank of the river Thames. (СЛАЙД 18 сцена) It took him 14 years to become a part owner of “The Globe”. Shakespeare wrote 37 plays, 17 comedies, 10 historical plays and 7 books of poems. But only 18 of them were published in his life time.

Pupil 1: It is known that only in 1613, at the height of his fame, Shakespeare returned to Stratford, where in April 23, 1616 he died. (СЛАЙД 19 сад) He was buried in a fine old church in Stratford. (СЛАЙД 20 церква) A monument was opened to the memory of the great playwright. (СЛАЙД 21 монумент  СЛАЙД 22 місце поховання) The best and the most popular Shakespeare’s works are “Othello” (СЛАЙД 23), “King Lear” (СЛАЙД 24), “Hamlet” (СЛАЙД 25), “Romeo and Juliet” СЛАЙД 26), “Macbeth”.
