     COURSE OF THE PROJECT-LESSON

I. Organize stage. Teacher presents the theme and the aims of the project-lesson.

TEACHER: Today we have an unusual lesson. Look around. What pictures can you see around the classroom? (Додаток №1). It is not a lesson at all. It’s our project work (тривав 2 тижні).  The topic of it is “FOOD. WHAT FOOD IS CONSIDERED TO BE HEALTHY?”  That’s why you will have to remember how to use the vocabulary necessary for you to talk about your food preferences, about cooking your favorite dishes, about differences between our national cuisine and British. You will teach our guests and me your favourite recipes. By the way, you have a good chance today to show the level of your communicative competence progress.

I have invited some guests. In addition, according to our Ukrainian traditions we have to meet them with bread and salt.

II. Actualization of the knowledge.   Talk T-Cl

TEACHER: Health is one of the most important things for every person. We need to care about it from early youth, because the situation we live in is rather tense. How do you think, what influences greatly to the level of our health?

PUPIL: The environment is much polluted, numerous cars spoil the air we breathe, and there are still consequences of Chernobyl disaster. I think that our health also depends on our style of life, our food.

TEACHER: Yes, you are right. All these influence greatly to the level of our health. In addition, one of the most important components of our health is really the food we eat. Human organism needs a lot of vitamins and mineral salts to function well. It is impossible to give a universal advice because we all are different. Now I will ask … to give us some recommendations that, I think, would be useful for everybody.

PUPIL: The most wholesome food is vegetables, fruit and cereals. We need to eat them every day. It is good to eat some avoid eating too much salt and sugar. It is better to use honey instead of sweets and cakes. However, the main thing is not to eat too much. There is an old rule: one must feel a little bit hungry after the dinner. Don’t eat late at night even if you want to eat.

III. The main part of the project.

1. Ukrainian, English cuisine.

TEACHER: To my mind, Ukrainian cuisine is the healthiest. It is closely linked to the customs, culture and way of life of the Ukrainian people. It is famous for its diversity and flavors. …’ part of our project was to prepare interesting information about Ukrainian cuisine.

j0293236   PUPIL: Our national cuisine reflects the richness of traditions and folkways of the Ukrainian people.

The most popular Ukrainian dish is borsch. This thick and delicious soup is prepared with a variety of ingredients including meat, mushrooms, beans and even prunes.

Mushroom soup, bean and pea soups, soups with dumplings and thick millet chowders are also popular.

“Holubtsi”, or stuffed cabbage, is another favorite dish, as are “varenyky” filled with potatoes, meat, cheese, sauerkraut, or berries such as blueberries or cherries. “Varenyky” are often mentioned in folk songs.

Ukrainians like dairy products. Some samples: cheese pancakes and “riazhanka” (fermented baked milk). There are no holidays without pies, “pampushky” (type of fritters), “baba” (a tall cylindrical cake) and honey cakes.

Ukrainian sausage is delicious. It is preserved in a special way – in porcelain vessels filled by melted fat.

Of course, every region of Ukraine has its own recipes and traditions.

TEACHER: What will you be charmed by if you have an occasion to be at the Ukrainian home?

PUPIL: If I have an occasion to be at the Ukrainian home, the sincere warmth of hosts and homemade food will charm me.

TEACHER: As we are studying English, we are interested in English meals and cuisine too. …, please, this was your part of the project.

j0293236   PUPIL: The English usually have four meals a day: breakfast, lunch, tea (5 o’clock) and dinner. Breakfast can be a full “English breakfast” of corn flakes with milk and sugar, or bacon and eggs, toasts and marmalade, tea or coffee. Some people, however, have just a cup of tea or coffee with a toast or something similar. This is usually called a “continental breakfast”.

At midday, everything is stopped for lunch. The English like what they call “good plain food”. Usually they like steak, roast beef, Yorkshire pudding, fish and chips.

Afternoon tea is taken at about 5 o’clock, but it can hardly be called a meal. It is a cup of tea and a cake or biscuits. At the weekends, afternoon tea is a special occasion. Friends and visitors are often invited to have a chat over a cup of tea.

Dinner is the most substantial meal of the whole day. It is usually eaten at 7 o’clock. The first course may be soup (though the English do not like it very much). The main course will often be fish or meat, perhaps the traditional roast beef of old England, and a lot of vegetables. The next course will be something sweet and often baked, such as a fruit pie. Last of all there may be cheese, often with biscuits.

It is common knowledge that the English are very fond of tea. They like to have “a nice cup of tea” six or eight times a day, sometimes even more.

As for British cuisine, some people criticize it. If you ask foreigners to name some typically English dishes, they will probably say “fish and chips” then stop. It is disappointing, but true that, there is no tradition in England of eating in restaurants, because the food does not lend itself to such preparation. English cooking is found at home. Therefore, it is difficult to find a good English restaurant with reasonable prices.

In most cities in Britain, you will find Indian, Chinese, French and Italian restaurants. In London, you will also find Indonesian, Mexican, and Greek… Cynics will say this is because the English have no “cuisine” themselves, but this is not quite true.

TEACHER: Well. And what about your point of view? Tell us your attitude to British cuisine.

PUPIL: I think it is unimaginable, boring, and tasteless; it is chips with everything and totally overcooked vegetables.

TEACHER: Look at this test and complete the sentences (appendix).

                                 COMPLETE THE SENTENCES.

Script: [Back to Video Questions]

Hi, I'm Randall, and I just wanted to share with you three ideas on how to exercise better. Number one, choose something that you enjoy. If you like running, run. If you like lifting weights, do that as well.

The second idea is do it with someone. Uh, it's kind of boring to do exercise by yourself, but if you do, you know, exercise with a friend . . . I enjoy doing it with my wife . . . then you can talk, and share ideas, share goals together.

And that leads to the third point. Choose something that is realistic. Don't try to run nine days a week. Just start basic. Start easy, and as you do that, you can kind of work up to things to where you're feeling comfortable and feeling good about your exercise program.

 5. Speaking practice.

TEACHER: Now, all of you, please, come up to the table , take your recipes and put them at the dishes with your cakes, sweets, cookies, etc. Thank you.

TEACHER: Let’s watch pupils’ presentations about healthy food.

IV. Summarizing the results of the project.

TEACHER: At the end of our work, I would like to sum up the results of our project. All pupils’ tasks were prepared very well. I want to thank my pupils for that they have done for this project.

However, remember that food is a part of our life, that the healthy food means our healthy life. Food should be wholesome and plentiful, and vitamins in it are of great importance. Be healthy!
