 Meals in Ukraine

 

 

               Level : elementary

 

Objectives:

  • to broaden  students’ knowledge on the topic “Food” ;

-to develop students’ listening  ,speaking , writing and reading skills ;

-to practice students’ communicative skills in given situation ;

-to interest to traditional eating habits in Ukraine .                                                                            

 

 

                 Materials: a poster «Traditional  Food in Ukraine», a text for listening

                 «Ukrainian Cookery» and reading «Favourite Ukrainian  Dishes»,  flashcards , 

                  a poem «Mother  bakes such  lovely pies», crossword .

 

 

                                           Procedure.

 

 

 1.Greeting .

 

 - Hello, dear pupils! Hello, dear guests! I hope you are very well. Maybe somebody’s nervous. Don’t worry dear. You are clever children. Everything will be Ok.

 

2.Aim.

 

                -  The topic of today’s lesson is  «Meals in Ukraine». You’ll extend active and      

                   passive knowledge of vocabulary and talk about traditional Ukrainian food. By  

                   the end of  the lesson you should be able…

4.Listening.

  1. Pre-listening activity.

      Discussion:

  • What kind of food Ukrainian famous for?
  • What are eating customs and traditions in Ukraine?
  • What are eating habits in your family?
  • Why do many Ukrainians prefer traditional food?

  1. Listening  to the text. «Ukrainian Cookery».
    • If you invite your new friends from England or from another country, you’ll treat them to our traditional meals. Let’s listen to about traditional Ukrainian cookery.

 

 

Ukrainian Cookery  .

 

 

 Ukraine enjoys a variety of traditional cookery, as well as favourite imported  dishes 

Breakfast is a simple meal of bread butter, and perhaps soft-boiled eggs. Home-    

made jam with whole berries in heavy syrup is priced. Lunch may consist of a fish

dish, a salad, or a vegetable.

  Dinner is the main meal, and guests are treated with great hospitality. Soup is made   

from available vegetables, such as carrots, cabbage, or turnip, plus a piece of meat

that is removed for serving. Accompaniments may include kasha, cabbage or pearl

barley.

  Desserts are simple, perhaps small pastries, a fruit puree, or a fruiit compote. Tea is   

the favourite drink, although coffee is enjoyed as well.

  Kvass, a slightly fermented drink, may, be make from white or dark bread,  

cranberries, or berries.

5.Speaking.

 

   Work in pairs.

Imagine your English friend has come to Ukraine and you tell him everything about meals in Ukraine. The student from Great Britain asks you questions as for traditional Ukrainian food. The table will help you.

                7.Reading.  «Favorite Ukrainian Dishes».

 

  1. Pre-reading activity.

                   Read the following list of dishes. Which of them are Ukrainian?

 

      a) Pizza, macaroni, borsch, cabbage soup (kapusniak), deruny, var­enyky,  

         holubtsi, 

         beefsteak, pud­ding, French fries.                                                                     

 

      b) What is your favourite food made of potatoes?  

         (Deruny, fried potatoes, boiled po­tatoes, mashed potatoes, French fries).

 

      c) Continue phrase: Potato is very important vegetable for Ukrainians because...   

         (we  can make deruny of it, we cannot cook borshch without potato, it is the   

         main   food   for Ukrainians, it is very tasty, etc.)

 

Text

 

Deruny is a traditional Ukrainian dish made of potatoes. Deruny are small po­tato

pancakes fried in oil. We eat deruny with sour-cream. Ukrainians prepare deruny

filled with meat or cottage1 cheese, fried mushrooms. They are very tasty!

You prepare deruny in this way: First you grate the potato, then you may add eggs,

flour, then fry the mixture in the pan. They are very tasty with butter, sour cream and

when they are hot.

Another favourite Ukrainian dish is borsch. It is made of potatoes, beets, cabbage,

meat and tomato source.

Ukrainians like varenyky very much. Varenyky can be filled with cheese, po­tatoes,

cabbage, meat. So, Ukrainian cuisine is rich and tasty!

    Simulation: Playing Host. Receiving Visitor.

 

  •        Pretend you’re receiving visitor from England and, naturally, you’ll treat them to your favourite traditional dishes.

Act it out, dramatize the situation.

 

 

10Home assignment.

Write down the recipe of the favorite Ukrainian dish in your family.

 

11.Summarizing.

Let’s sum up our work. Most of you have worked hard today.

Some of you were rather quiet today; you are to be more active at the lesson. You can’t learn to speak English just by sitting and listening to other pupils. Forget about being shy and nervous. It’s far better to make a few mistakes than to say nothing. Your marks are… Bye.
