Topic: Means of transport
Learning outcomes: By the end of the lesson learners will be able to:
English level: Pre-Intermediate
The lesson introduces learners to one of the most interesting topics Means of Transport. Reading will help them to develop an ability to express their ideas. They will revise topic words and enlarge their vocabulary with new words and structures.
The lesson is suitable for teenagers and should be around 40 minutes long.
Material: A teacher needs a picture and parts of the text for students (worksheet 1). Also a teacher will write some information on the blackboard.
Procedure
I. Lead-in
A teacher demonstrates a picture that shows a man on a Segway. There are some questions for pupils to answer below the picture:
1. Do you know what means of transport it is?
2. Have you ever ridden it?
3. How do you think where we can use it?
II. While-reading task
a) jigsaw reading
A teacher divides pupils in three groups. Each group has information from different parts of the text about Segways and they must tell other students about the part of the text they have read. This way the learners construct meaning from the text collectively.
S1: The Segway has got two wheels.
S2: It is very practical.
S3: It does not cause any pollution.
b) vocabulary drill
Pupils have to find words which mean the following:
Each group has to make up three sentences with new words.
c) during-reading task
The learners have to say whether statements are true or false.
1. The Segway weighs 60 kilos. (False)
2. It does not cause any pollution. (True)
3. It needs some petrol. (False)
4. The maximum speed is 30 kph. (True)
III. Post-reading task
Students read and prepare some questions for the other group.
G1: Why is the Segway convenient and practical?
G2: What helps to balance?
G3: Does it stop immediately when a person wants it?
IV. Summing up
T: There are different means of transport that we use in our everyday life. We can go by bus, by car, by bike, by ship or by motorbike. Today you have learnt more information about a modern vehicle and maybe one day it will become usual transport.
V. Hometask
Learners have to do a project of an advert of the Segway.
