Приклад запитання: Read and answer the questions In the 16th century, an age of great marine and terrestrial exploration, Ferdinand Magellan led the first expedition to sail around the world. As a young Portuguese noble, he served the king of Portugal, but he became involved in the quagmire of political intrigue at court and lost the king’s favor. After he was dismissed from service by the king of Portugal, he offered to serve the future Emperor Charles V of Spain.A papal decree of 1493 had assigned all land in the New World west of 50 degrees W longitude to Spain and all the land east of that line to Portugal. Magellan offered to prove that the East Indies fell under Spanish authority. On September 20, 1519, Magellan set sail from Spain with five ships. More than a year later, one of these ships was exploring the topography of South America in search of a water route across the continent. This ship sank, but the remaining four ships searched along the southern peninsula of South America. Finally they found the passage they sought near 50 degrees S latitude. Magellan named this passage the Strait of All Saints, but today it is known as the Strait of Magellan. One ship deserted while in this passage and returned to Spain, so fewer sailors were privileged to gaze at that first panorama of the Pacific Ocean. Those who remained crossed the meridian now known as the International Date Line in the early spring of 1521 after 98 days on the Pacific Ocean. During those long days at sea, many of Magellan’s men died of starvation and disease.Later, Magellan became involved in an insular conflict in the Philippines and was killed in a tribal battle. Only one ship and 17 sailors under the command of the Basque navigator Elcano survived to complete the westward journey to Spain and thus prove once and for all that the world is round, with no precipice at the edge.1. The 16th century was an age of great ______ exploration.

Приклад запитання: TV adsBy Sarah StevensI was watching TV the other night and – as usual – there were all those irritating advertisements in the middle of the film, disturbing my concentration! Well, I don’t usually take any notice of the ads, in fact I quite often turn the volume down when they’re on, as they’re so boring. But this time I’m not quite sure what happened to me. One ad caught my attention. It was for a smartphone, and I was actually thinking of getting one at the time. So anyway, I decided to go for it, and I ordered one. The advertisement made it sound so brilliant!Well, it arrived the next day. It was super fast, and at first I was impressed. However, I really regret it now. I’m not at all happy with it, and I’m sure it’s faulty. For example, I texted a friend yesterday and the message went to the wrong person! That’s hopeless – and it could be quite embarrassing too. Another thing is, the battery doesn’t last for very long. I charged it last night but it’s almost dead again already. It’s very disappointing, and I hope they give me my money backSarah usually enjoys the adverts she sees on TV.

Приклад запитання: Read the text, answer the questions. Some people say: “It’s useful to dream”. So, Peter often imagines the city, where he would like to live.It could be quite a big city with not very high buildings, which have large roofs, and systems of stores. The streets of the city of his dream would be straight and trees would make shadows for people. There must not be any rubbish. All litter would be recycled. People, who work for such recycling companies, would walk up and down the streets to look for some rubbish for recycling. All energy would come from the sun and the Earth. All large roofs have batteries for collecting solar energy. Solar energy could light the houses and be power for cars. Earth energy would make houses warm in winter. People could use the energy of Earth because it was for inside.Schools must be the houses of happy childhood. Students would study subjects only in real situations on practice. There wouldn’t be any homework, no learning by heart. But there must be some intellectual clubs for listening to poems and literary works.Hospital would be half-empty because all people would have very nice health. People would be kind and polite as they had few problems. They would have a rest after their work. It must not be any additional work. But they could develop their creativity: painting, singing, acting, handmade.Peter understands his dreams are too optimistic and it may seem they are far from reality, But he prefers repeating “All dreams may come true”. Early or late. Some people advise to dream.

Приклад запитання: Read the text and write T for True, F for FalseAlthough nowadays the majority of people prefer to learn out about the news from the Internet or TV, reading is still an important leisure activity in Britain and there is a very large number of books, newspapers and magazines devoted to a wide variety of subjects. The biggest-selling magazines in Britain (after TV guides which sell over 3 million copies a week) are women’s and pop music publications. The best-selling books are not great works of literature but stories of mystery and romance which are sold in huge quantities (Agatha Christie’s novels, for example, have sold more than 300 million copies). It has been estimated that only about 3 per cent of the population read «classics» such as Charles Dickens or Jane Austin, whereas popular book sales can be enormous, particularly if the books are connected with TV shows or dramatisations.Agatha Christie’s novels are still popular in Britain. - T for True, F for False

Приклад запитання: Read the text and answer the question. When I was a little boy, I wanted to be a pilot. I thought it would be so cool to fly an aeroplane around the world. But my dream changed when I got a bit older and started playing football. Then I wanted to be a professional footballer.I played for my school team and I played for my local team at weekends. I was really good and when I was 14 a scout from Manchester United came to watch me play. They offered me a place in their youth academy and I moved to Manchester with my dad. I loved it there! The training was hard but I was playing with some of the best young players in the country. I played for the England Under-16 team, the Under-17s and the Under-18s. And then, when I was 18, I made my first appearance for the Manchester United First Team. It was amazing! But after that, things didn't go so well. I got injured and I couldn't play for a long time. I had to have an operation on my knee and I had lots of physiotherapy. When I was better, I went back to training but I wasn't as good as before. There were so many other good players at the club and the manager told me I wasn't going to get many more chances to play for the First Team. I was really disappointed and I left the club. Now I'm not sure what I want to do. I like cooking, so maybe I'll be a chef. Or maybe I'll go to university and study sports science. But one thing's for sure - I'll always love football!narrator - оповідачWhat was the narrator's childhood dream?

Приклад запитання: Read the text and choose the correct answerMAN AND MACHINEBY MARK RAVENSScience and technology have developed a lot since the fifteenth century, when the artist Leonardo da Vinci drew mechanical figures that looked like men – the first known robot designs. Now, of course, robots are everywhere, from factories to space stations, and they safely carry out all sorts of tasks, from cutting the grass to performing surgery. However, until recently most of them haven’t looked like humans at all, as Leonardo imagined, and they certainly haven’t had feelings. But now all that is beginning to change.Imagine a world in which robots not only look like us but also know our moods, and have feelings themselves. It might even be possible for robots to become our friends! Science fiction writers have written about a world just like that for many years, and scientists are now predicting that intelligent robots like these will exist quite soon. In fact, they’ve already produced one that recognizes sound, movement and touch. Its bright red heart, which you can see through its plastic body, beats faster if you are rough with the robot or shout at it. But its heart slows down if you are gentle with it. Although it can’t talk, it’s easy to believe the robot actually has feelings! It’s true that so far ‘human’ robots do not really move, talk or respond in the way we humans do, but they are becoming more advanced all the time. At some point in the future, a robot will definitely be created that may not look like us, but will be capable of doing anything that we can. And then we will truly be in the world of science fiction stories! What does Mark say about da Vinci’s robot drawings?
