Приклад запитання: THE SHOEMAKER'S SHOPOne afternoon many years ago, George Cox robbed Barkley’s Bank. He stole over 50,000 pounds. But unfortunately, when he came out of the bank, the police were waiting for him. George was arrested and sentenced to twenty-five years in prison.Years passed and finally the day arrived when George was a free man again. At the door of the prison he was given back his old clothes, a small suitcase and his wallet. He walked to the railway station and caught a train back to the small town he was born and brought up. He chose it for his permanent residence. After George had got off the train, he came out of the station and looked around him. How everything had changed! There was too much traffic now. What used to be a quiet little street was now an enormous supermarket, where there used to be a park, there was an ugly car park.George couldn't believe his eyes. All these changes made him feel a bit depressed so he decided to have a cup of tea, He looked for an old corner cafe where he used to meet his friends when he was a teenager. But of course it was gone. In its place now stood McDonald's, which George had never seen before in his life. He sat down on the hard plastic seat and waited for the waitress to come and lay his order. Nobody came. Ten minutes later he realized that he had to go and ask for what he wanted. «A cup of tea, please», he said. «We don't make tea, only coffee», answered the black girl behind the counter. Everything had changed, it seemed. There was nothing here for him any more,But as he opened his wallet to pay for the cup of coffee he didn't really want, he discovered an old yellow ticket. He looked at it closely. It was a ticket for a pair of shoes which he had taken to the shoe repairer on the day before the robbery - twenty-five years ago. And of course he hadn't been able to go back for them.George left the McDonald's and walked up High Street, past what used to be the cinema but which a Leisure Center (whatever that meant) was now. Then he turned right down a narrow street, and there on the corner was a small shoemaker's shop. The same little dirty shop was still there, after all these years. George looked in the window and couldn't believe his eyes, it was the same shoemaker — much older now, of course, with a long white beard. George went into the shop. He suddenly felt very embarrassed when he showed the shoemaker the old yellow ticket.«Excuse me», he said. «You won't remember me. I've been away from this town for twenty-five years, but on the day before I left, I gave you a pair of shoes to repair and you gave me this ticket. 1 know it's ridiculous, after all these years, but I wonder if...»The shoemaker took the old yellow ticket, looked at it closely and then disappeared to the back of the shop. A few minutes later he came back.«Was it a pair of black shoes? » he asked.«Yes», said George excitedly.«A pair of black shoes, size eight and a half? »«Yes», said George.«Needed any heels? » asked the shoemaker.«Yes, that's right! You mean you've still got them? »«Oh, yes. I've still got them», said the shoemaker. «They'll be ready on Friday».І. True or False?1. The police were waiting for George Cox when he tried to break into theshop.

Приклад запитання: 1. Read the text below. For questions (1—5) choose the correct answer (A, B or C). SCHOOLS IN THE USA School usually means the same in American Eng lish as in British English, but sometimes it can also mean ‘university’. If a parent says ‘I work during the mornings when the children are at school’, it means that the children are young and are probably at elementary school. But ‘My youngest son is always at school now’ almost certainly means that he has started university in another city. Many Americans send their children to a nursery school, or to day care or pre-school at an early age. At 5 children go to kindergarten. As in Britain US schools are divided into primary and secondary, but these words are rarely used. It is more common to talk about elementary school, junior high school and high school and the grade, or year group, students are in. Elementary schools teach children from kindergarten till the end of sixth grade. Grades seven and eight are taken at junior high school, and the ninth to the twelfth grades at high school.1. In American English “school” is a ______________.

Приклад запитання: Space tourism The first space tourist was a 60-year-old billionaire businessman from California, Dennis Tito, who spent six days on the International Space station in 2001. The trip cost him around $20 million, though nobody knows exactly how much it really was. Dennis had started his working life as a space scientist and had worked on three missions to Mars in the 1960s. He then made his billions working in the financial sector. There were several problems before he finally went into space on a Russian supply ship. He had originally planned to leave from the US, but that wasn’t possible. As a result he had to do his eight-month training in Russia before his trip, which he found quite difficult as it was so different from what he was used to. However, Mr Tito says that he found the experience very exciting and he wasn’t frightened at all because there was so much to do and see. In fact he would have liked to stay longer. When he was back on Earth, he encouraged other people to go into space, but very few have done it so far. He said that he hardly felt the take-off into space as it was so smooth and quiet, which was surprising because from outside the noise is huge and very scary. The best part was the first feeling of being able to float around with no gravity and the sight of Earth from space, which was really amazing. He was disappointed to return to Earth after eight days in space, but if he weren’t so old, he would happily go again. Even though his business lost some money while he was away, he believes that if he hadn’t travelled to space, he wouldn’t have become the happiest person alive. Several companies today are planning to take tourists into space. Many rich people have bought tickets, but there is no regular space travel service yet. But if Mr Tito hadn’t gone all those years ago, these companies wouldn’t have been able to think about space tourism. What do we learn about Mr Tito in paragraph 1?

Приклад запитання: Read the text and and choose the title.Monday morning is the worst time of the week for a lot of people, because it is the end of the weekend and the beginning of another week of work. More things seem to go wrong on Monday morning that on other days. Jane, a friend of mine, has two children, a boy and a girl, who often make her life very difficult, especially on Monday morning. One Monday morning was worse than usual. She wanted to do some baking, so she sent the children into the garden to play. She made her husband’s favourite cake and put it in the oven. When she had finished she looked out into the garden and saw David climbing a tree. She was not worried because he had never fallen before. Then she went upstairs to make the beds. When she was upstairs she suddenly heard a branch break. She looked out quickly and saw David on the ground. His arm was in a funny position and she thought he had broken it. Her neighbor came to help. Jane asked her to phone the doctor. In half an hour the doctor came and took David to hospital. Jane sent her daughter to play next door. As she went into the house she smelt something burning. ‘Oh, no! The cake!’ she cried. It was burnt black. She sat down to have a rest. When John came home for lunch he saw his wife sitting there and felt that something was wrong. He also smelt something burning. ‘Tell me the worst’, he said. ‘Well, I’ll tell you the good news first’, Jane replied. ‘I’ve made your favourite cake this morning, the house isn’t on fire and our daughter hasn’t broken her arms.
