Приклад запитання: Climb every mountainStephen Venables’ love of mountains began at nine years old on a skiing trip to the Alps. ‘I was thrilled,’ he remembers. ‘It was actually far more impressive and exciting than seeing the Himalayas for the first time, because when you’re nine it’s all new and you don’t know what to expect.’From that moment, Stephen knew that he wanted to climb mountains, but he didn’t realise then that one day he would be the first British man to climb Everest without oxygen. 1___ He was coming down from the top of the mountain when he was caught in a snowstorm. After years of climbing, he was prepared for this and he knew that the best thing he could do was wait for the weather to change. ‘At first I tried sitting on a rock because rock is warmer than snow, but it wasn’t completely flat. 2___ I did sleep a bit,’ he says. ‘They always say you should stay awake, but I was totally exhausted.’ Fortunately, the storm passed, and Stephen managed to climb back down to his camp and enter the record books. The Everest expedition wasn’t Stephen’s only difficult climb. In 1992, while climbing another Himalayan mountain, he fell 100 m, breaking both his legs. ‘It was very unlucky that it happened, but I was lucky that there were five of us.’ The group included Chris Bonnington and Stephen’s good friend Harish Kapadia. It took them twelve hours to make camp in a safe place. Then two of the team went for help. ‘I think that was one of the most wonderful moments of my life – finally being in the tent and realising that I could just lie back in my sleeping bag.’ But Stephen didn’t know that the rescue would take four days. 3___ ‘On the last day we had a boiled sweet and we used the last tea bag so many times that it wasn’t actually changing the colour of the water.’ But luckily, the team managed to keep going until help arrived. There are really two big waterfalls divided by a small island there. The noise of the Niagara falling waters can be heard for twenty-five kilometres. Imagine a million tons of water flowing over a cliff ninety feet high every five minutes and you will get an idea of that terrible noise. And what great power the Niagara have! Приклад запитання: Task 1.I never used to care about animals or the environment, but when I read that pandas and polar bears could become extinct, I changed my mind. That's why I decided to help. I love the sea so I joined an organisation in Spain that protects Caretta caretta, the loggerhead turtle. They were looking for volunteers, so I flew there in the summer to help.I learned a lot about the loggerhead turtle. It is disappearing because people build near the sandy beaches where the turtle needs to leave its eggs. Also, baby turtles sometimes need the moonlight to find the sea. Plus, loggerhead turtles eat plastic rubbish because it looks like fish, and they die. They need clean beaches to survive.I had an interesting job. Every day, I searched for turtle nests and counted the eggs in them. Then I put cages around the nests to protect them. At night, I checked the beach to make sure that no animals were trying to eat the eggs. I also cleaned the beach and helped baby turtles return to the ocean. The best day was when some baby turtles walked slowly towards the water. I watched closely, ready to help if one went the wrong way. When the babies entered the water and swam away, I felt like crying, but I was so happy to help them.Read the article and use the words below to replace the words in boldIf pandas die out, I will be very sad
Приклад запитання: Read the text and do the tasks. The valuable fence. The Greggs were coming back from their first trip to Europe. On board "The Queen Elizabeth" they got acquainted with a Frenchman. His English was good and soon they got quite friendly. The Frenchman told the Greggs that he was an artist and his name was Lautisse. He asked them to keep it in a secret. He did not like publicity. The Greggs didn't know any artist whose name was Lautisse. So they talked to the ship's librarian and found out that their new friend was the world's famous artist whose pictures were very valuable and expensive. The librarian found a book with a biographical sketch and a photograph. The sketch said that the artist had retired at fifty-three to a villa on the Rivera. He said he would never touch a brush again. Lautisse was going to spend a month in New York. Mrs. Greggs suggested that he would come to their place for the weekend. The artist accepted the invitation and made them promise not to invite any other people to their place and not to speak about art. At the appointed time Lautisse arrived at the Greggs and they were happy to see him. Mr. Greggs and his wife did their best to entertain the famous artist, but he did not want to go for a swim or walk in the wood. He wanted to sit and relax. The next morning Mr. Greggs got up very early as he wanted to paint the fence around the vegetable garden. He took a brush and was about to begin painting when Lautisse approached him, as soon as he saw the brush, he seized it from Mr. Greggs and began painting the fence. The same day Lautisse started for New York. Some correspondents found out about Lautisse's stay in New York. An article was published in one of newspapers saying: "Mr. Lautisse has spent all his time in New York except for the weekend at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Greggs. He met the Greggs on the ship coming from Europe". The day after the story appeared, two reporters came to the Greggs' place. They wanted to know everything about the stay of the famous artist at their place. They were shown the fence painted and signed by Lautisse. A long article, headlined "Lautisse paints again", was published the next day. The fence turned out to be a valuable thing. It was sold for a big sum of money. It was taken to a museum. The fence was not worth it. 2. What was the Frenchman they got acquainted with?
