Read the text and choose the correct answer, A, B or C.MAN AND MACHINEby Mark RavensScience and technology have developed a lot since the fifteenth century, when the artist Leonardo da Vinci drew mechanical figures that looked like men – the first known robot designs. Now, of course, robots are everywhere, from factories to space stations, and they safely carry out all sorts of tasks, from cutting the grass to performing surgery. However, until recently most of them haven’t looked like humans at all, as Leonardo imagined, and they certainly haven’t had feelings. But now all that is beginning to change. Imagine a world in which robots not only look like us but also know our moods, and have feelings themselves. It might even be possible for robots to become our friends! Science fiction writers have written about a world just like that for many years, and scientists are now predicting that intelligent robots like these will exist quite soon. In fact, they’ve already produced one that recognizes sound, movement and touch. Its bright red heart, which you can see through its plastic body, beats faster if you are rough, with the robot, or shout at it. But its heart slows down if you are gentle with it. Although it can’t talk, it’s easy to believe the robot actually has feelings! It’s true that so far ‘human’ robots do not really move, talk or respond in the way we humans do, but they are becoming more advanced all the time. At some point in the future, a robot will definitely be created that may not look like us, but will be capable of doing anything that we can. And then we will truly be in the world of science fiction stories! 1. Mark says that when da Vinci drew some robots, he

Приклад запитання: Read about the climate in Madagascar on a travel website. Then choose true or false.Madagascar – When to goMadagascar has two seasons, a warm, wet season from November to April, and a cooler dry season between May and October. However, different parts of the country have very different weather. The east coast is hotter and wetter, with up to 4000mm of rainfall per year. In the rainy season, there are strong winds, and these can cause a lot of damage. Avoid visiting eastern Madagascar between January and March because the weather can make road travel very difficult. The dry season is cooler and more pleasant. The high, central part of the country is much drier and cooler. About 1,400 mm of rain falls in the rainy season, with some thunderstorms, but the summer is usually sunny and dry, but it can be cold, especially in the mornings, with freezing showers, and it may snow in mountain areas above 2,400m, and even stay there for several days. The west coast is the driest part of the island. Here, the winter months are pleasant with little rain, cooler temperatures and blue skies. The summers can be extremely hot, especially in the southwest. This part of the country is semi-desert, and only gets around 300mm of rain per year.1  Madagascar has four seasons: spring, summer, autumn and winter.
Приклад запитання: Read the text and do the tasks.THE HISTORY OF THE T-SHIRTWhite cotton T-shirts were first worn by the US Navy in the Second World War and by 1948, every American soldier was wearing one too. But it was Hollywood films that made the T-shirt really popular: actors Marlon Brando and James Dean wore classic white T-shirts in On the Waterfront (1954) and Rebel Without a Cause (1955). After these films, every young man wanted to wear one.Women didn't begin to wear T-shirts until the end of the 1950s. In the 1959 French film A bout de souffle (Breathless), American actress Jean Seberg wore a T-shirt advertising an English language newspaper. This started a new fashion in T-shirts for women, but it wasn't until the mid-1960s that companies like Budweiser and Coca-Cola started using T-shirts as 'walking advertisements'.Later, the T-shirt became a way of saying something important. For example, soon after the black American leader Angela Davis went to prison in 1970, people all around the world were wearing T-shirts with the message 'Free Angela'.In the 1970s, French fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent designed a famous blue T-shirt with his name in white letters. Giorgio Armani has also used T-shirts in his fashion shows. And in 2001, a limited number of white `J`adore Dior' T-shirts sold quickly at well over £100 each!Choose if the statements are TRUE or FALSE1. T-shirts became more popular because of two 1950s American films.

Приклад запитання: Read the article and choose the correct answer, A, Bor C.NO MORE PLASTIC BAGS!by Environment Correspondent Jack MarshallIn 2011 a new law, the first of its kind in the UK, was passedin Wales. Shops were no longer allowed to give away freeplastic bags to their customers. Instead, they had to charge 5pper bag. The money was collected and given to charity. Theresults were amazing – within a year, the demand forsupermarket bags fell by about 96%. The extra charge wasenough to get Welsh shoppers to remember to take their ownbags whenever they went shopping. The law was the result of a huge campaign, which wassupported by a national newspaper as well as variouspoliticians and also green campaigners. It has becomeincreasingly popular too. When it was introduced, it wassupported by about 59% of the Welsh population, but afteronly six months the figure was 70%.There is no doubt that plastic bags are bad news for theenvironment. Every year in the UK, about 18 billion plasticbags are supplied by supermarkets – that’s about 290 bags perperson. Then, when they have been used (for an average of 20minutes each) they’re thrown away. Some of them end upbeing buried underground in landfill sites, and that’s wherethey do the damage. They remain there for hundreds of years, poisoning the soil and polluting the environment. It’simportant to remember, too, that before they even reach theshops, the plastic bags have already travelled thousands ofmiles – many are produced in China or India and then shippedto countries in Europe, including the UK.The solution to this problem is obvious – stop producing somany plastic bags, and stop giving them away, but shoppers inthe UK have been very slow to change their ways. However, the success of the new Welsh law shows that it is possible tochange people’s shopping habits. According to researchersfrom Cardiff University, part of the reason for the popularityof the law is that the money it raises goes to charity, not thegovernment. Certainly, hundreds of thousands of pounds havebeen raised since the law was introduced. The money has goneto a variety of good causes, including local children’s charitiesand wildlife conservation organisations too.1 The new law meant that in Wales
